New cut means no raises for Caroline school employees

An unexpected cut to the school budget means there will be no raises for Caroline County school employees.

Caroline School Superintendent Greg Killough says a recent vote by the Board of Supervisors will have a negative impact on funding for the school system.

Last month, the Board of Supervisors voted 4-2 to cut $350,000 from its local contribution to the School Board.

Earlier this year, supervisors had promised to give level funding of $11.5 million.

Killough said the cut will result in no raises for school staff, larger class sizes and the need to do more with less.

“We hope that the county supervisors will reconsider because of the impact that it will have on our budget,” Killough said. “If they don’t, we are going to have to make some hard decisions.”

Killough said they are $100,000 short of being able to cover a state-mandated increase in Virginia Retirement System funding, and school officials are “trying to figure out how to close that gap.”

School Board members will meet at 6:30 tonight to discuss what options they have to fund the school system.
